The Trademark Office accepted 233,177applications for
goods and services in 2000, 52,462 more than that of
1999, constituting the year in which the largest number
of applications were filed since our reform and opening
out. Among the number 181,717 were domestic applications,
counting for 81.4% of the total, 24,623 were foreign,
counting for 11%, and 16,873 were Madrid applications
for territorial extension, counting for 7.6%. From the
point of view of classes ,the largest classes were Classes
25(clothing), 9(electronic appliances),30(foodstuffs),42(restaurants,
medical care services, beauty saloons and computer programming
service), and 5(pharmaceuticals), the respective numbers
of which were 22,250, 18,679, 14,679, 11,314, and 10,688.
Class 42 had the most rapid growth. The number of applications
came to No.4 following classes 25, 9 and 30. The Trademark
Office also accepted 9,892 renewal applications, 4,649
opposition applications, and 45,381 other kinds of applications.
42 certification mark applications were accepted, in
addition to 3 collective marks and 256 special signs.
In 2000, the Trademark Office preliminarily approved
167,307 applications for registration, and handled 19,247
modification cases, 17,223 assignment, 10,929 renewal,
1,905 cancellation and withdrawal, 10,600 license contract
recordal, and 1,495 corrections of certificates. It
also concluded 2,631 opposition cases, approved 11 certification
marks, 1 collective mark and 256 special signs. Totally,
158,575 marks were approved for registration in the
year. By the end of 2000, China had 1,249,438 trademarks
in force.
In 2000, the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board
(TRAB) received 5,497 applications of different kinds,
among which 4,214 were foreign applications and 1,283
domestic. Among the 5,497 cases, 3,996 were requests
for review of refusals, 755 for review of opposition
decisions, 191 for adjudication on disputed trademarks,
13 for review of the cancellation of registrations,
517 for cancellation of improper-registrations, and
25 for repeated process of review and adjudication.
19 applications were rejected of acceptance and 40 withdrawn.
By the end of 2000, TRAB concluded 5,639 cases in accordance
with the law. 752 more than that of 1999, which constituted
the year in which the largest number of judgements were
made.
